Rules, rules, rules! Sometimes it seems there are rules about everything! But rules serve a very useful purpose. They help keep us within the limits of acceptable behavior. Rules can be liberating because they free us to function safely within their boundaries.
As your school or program year gets underway, it’s good to establish or review classroom rules and expectations. Some call this a class covenant. Children usually respond better to these when we involve them in naming and setting the limits. Focus your discussion on respect for God and for each other. Create a poster or bulletin board that states the rules in clear and simple terms. And then be firm, fair, and consistent in enforcing the rules as well as in reinforcing positive behavior. If you have children in your home, you might develop a family covenant as well.
We keep you, your students, and your families in our prayers. We thank you for commitment to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with the children in your care.
